Room 1 – Garden design through the ages

Picture: Room 1

Gardens have always been special places. They are separated from their surroundings by walls, fences or hedges and thus distinguished from uncultivated nature. The gates which give access to them are often the first indication of their character or the status of their owner.

Gardens are a direct expression of man's relationship to nature, an attempt to realize a dream of paradise through creative design. Each epoch developed its own artistic ideas, producing over the centuries a wide range of creative masterpieces.
